Quick answer: your current grade is the weighted average of only the work you've been graded on so far.

Current Grade = Σ(Category Average × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight of graded categories)

Ungraded categories are left out of both the top and bottom of that formula — they are not treated as a zero. If your class runs on total points instead of percentages, use Points earned ÷ Points possible × 100 instead.

What Is a Current Grade Calculator?

A current grade calculator turns the assignments, quizzes, and tests you've already been graded on into a single running percentage — the number your teacher's gradebook would show you today if you asked. It differs from a final grade calculator, which works backward from a target grade to tell you what you still need to score. This tool answers "what do I have right now," using only completed categories, weighted the way your syllabus says they count.

How to Calculate Your Current Grade

1

List every grading category from your syllabus (Homework, Quizzes, Tests, Projects, Participation) and its weight.

2

Find your average score in each category you've actually completed work for.

3

Multiply each category's average by its weight (as a decimal).

4

Add up those weighted values — this is your weighted points earned so far.

5

Add up the weights of only the categories that have grades, and divide step 4 by that total.

6

The result is your current grade as a percentage. Compare it to your school's letter-grade scale.

Weighted Categories

Total Points

Points Earned ÷ Points Possible × 100

Most U.S. middle and high schools use one of these two systems. If your teacher's portal (PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Google Classroom) shows percentages next to category names like "Tests 40%," you're on a weighted system. If it shows a running total like "342/400 points," you're on a points system, and the two totals divide out directly.

Worked Example

A student has grades in three of four categories. The final category, Final Exam, hasn't happened yet.

CategoryWeightAverageWeighted Contribution
Homework20%92%18.4
Quizzes20%84%16.8
Tests40%78%31.2
Final Exam20%— not yet graded ——
Totals (graded categories only)66.4 ÷ 80 weight

Current Grade = 66.4 ÷ 0.80 = 83.0% (B)

Notice the Final Exam's 20% weight is left out of the denominator entirely, not counted as a zero. That's what makes it a current grade rather than a worst-case grade.

Why Your Number May Differ From Your School Portal

  • Dropped scores: many teachers drop the lowest quiz or homework grade before averaging.
  • Extra credit: bonus points can push a category average above 100%.
  • Rounding rules: some schools round 89.5% up to a 90% (A-); others truncate.
  • Missing vs. ungraded work: a missed deadline is usually scored as a 0, while work that hasn't been assigned yet is excluded — the two look similar in a gradebook but affect the math very differently.
  • Weight changes mid-term: some teachers adjust category weights partway through a semester.

When your school's portal disagrees with a manual calculation, the portal is applying one of the rules above. Check your syllabus or ask your teacher which apply to your class.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate your current grade in a class?

Multiply each graded category's average by its weight, add those together, then divide by the total weight of only the categories that have grades so far. Ungraded categories are left out of the total, not counted as zero.

What is the formula for current grade?

Current Grade = Σ(Category Average × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight of graded categories). If your class uses total points instead of weighted categories, Current Grade = Points earned ÷ Points possible × 100.

Why is my calculated grade different from the one in my school portal?

Portals often apply rules a simple calculator can't see: dropped lowest scores, extra credit, rounding to the nearest whole number, or a category weight that changed partway through the term. Check your syllabus or gradebook settings for these rules.

Do ungraded assignments count as zero in a current grade?

No. A current grade reflects only completed work. Ungraded assignments and categories are excluded from both the numerator and the denominator, not scored as zero. Missing work is different from ungraded work, and a missed assignment usually does count as zero.

What's the difference between a current grade and a final grade?

A current grade is a running average based only on what has been graded so far, so its weights don't add up to 100% until the course ends. A final grade assumes every category is complete and weights total 100%.

Should I use weighted categories or total points to find my grade?

Use whichever method your teacher's gradebook uses. If your syllabus lists percentages like Homework 20%, Tests 50%, use weighted categories. If it lists a running points total instead, use points earned divided by points possible.
